Free Easy Media Tools

Today I attended a seminar from NKU ITSC titled “Free Web-based Tools.” However, it was less about the tools being web-based, and more on the fact that they were easy to use and free to download from the net. The software applications are all media related to make production workflow a lot easier.  The seminar lasted a few hours and covered Jing (screen capture software), Photostory (Photo Slideshow software), and Audacity (Audio-editing software). Once I talk about these three tools, then I’ll list the rest of the tools that our seminar didn’t have the time to cover. Make note that the first three here and some of the tools in the list below are software applications that you have to download and others that you can use on the web without downloading.

Jing

  • Capture Images – snap a picture of anything on  your desktop.
  • Record Video – Record video of what you do, or what you see.
  • Share Online – Instantly uploaded. Share in email, IM or blogs.
  • Screen-capturing software
  • Saves as image and video files
  • Great for online tutorials
  • Must have account with Screencast in order to share!
  • Videos export as .swfs, which can be viewed on flash video. (Pro version can export as mpeg4.)

Photostory

  • Create slideshows using your digital photos. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures.
  • Add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then, personalize them with titles and captions.
  • Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an email. Watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile-based portable device.
  • Super basic wizard to import pictures and audio for a “story” (audio slideshow)

Audacity – We use this software for voice overs at Insight Media!

  • Simple 2-track audio-editin software.
  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg, MP3, and WAV sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice and mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
